18.06.2026 Conversations with Rein Maran
Published on 18.06.2026 in Tiit Lepik’s mailing list (in Estonian). The original letter in Smaily
A few days ago the June 2026 issue of Teater Muusika Kino went on sale. I did not check myself, but TMK’s film editor Donald Tomberg allowed me to share today with friends and acquaintances the pages of the article Conversations with Rein Maran in the issue that has come out. The presentation of TMK’s June issue:

Teater.Muusika.Kino 6/2026
In the June issue of Teater. Muusika. Kino, Ott Karulin analyses Ugala’s ending season, Linda Kaljundi and Kristina Norman talk about the production “Kastepunkt” (“Dew Point”), and Rein Maran, Urmas Tartes and Tiit Lepik about nature documentaries. Aare Rander writes about Marc Ribaud’s ballet “La Fille mal gardée”, Annika A. Koppel continues her overview of 100 years of Estonian film journalism, and Imre Rammul reviews Andrejs Ekis and Tanel Ing’s feature film “Swingers 2”. Tanel Ing “answers”, and the “Persona grata” is Marko Post

I consider Rein Maran my teacher and friend. He once taught me to hold a camera and even taught an IT enthusiast like me to rename files and folders so that they would be easy to archive.
I looked in my mailbox — on 16 December 2025, at my urging, my good friend the writer Peeter Sauter and TMK’s film editor Donald Tomberg shook hands on making a long story about Rein Maran.
The first conversation
On 09.11.2019, at my prompting, my comrade Urmas Tartes did a 3.5-hour interview with Rein for looduskalender.ee, then run by my friend Gennadi Skromnov. For unclear reasons it remained unpublished. With Urmas’s permission, with Peeter’s help and Donald’s editing, it became the first conversation in TMK’s June 2026 issue.

The second conversation
An hour-long phone conversation of mine with Rein Maran, recorded on 26.09.2021. That time I had tried setting my phone to record calls. So one of my many very exciting and educational conversations with Rein was saved. With Rein’s permission, with Peeter’s help and Donald’s editing, it became the second conversation.
